A police report was first filed after a guest sailing aboard the Carnival Victory discovered that her iPad had been removed from her checked luggage. She soon filed a police report with local Miami police and an investigation was opened to find the thieves. It, however didn’t take the police very long to discover the thieves. Jean Russell Thomas became the primary suspect in the case after security footage revealed that he had stolen the iPad from a passenger’s bag while scanning it in an x-ray machine. Thomas was observed removing the bag from the conveyor belt, handling the bag, and then proceeding to smuggle an item underneath his shirt. Police later discovered that Thomas had stolen both an iPod and a iPod Touch after he posted the devices for sale on his Craigslist account.

Police soon began a sting operation, where they arranged to purchase the iPad from Thomas. The local police and Thomas arranged for a meeting to complete the transaction. Upon arrival, Thomas was arrested along with another PortMiami security guard who had been aiding him as a lookout. Thomas has been charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen goods. His accomplice, Sherece Renee Nelson, has been charged with dealing in stolen goods.
