Today marks the 140th anniversary of Holland America Line’s first sailing, making Holland America Line the oldest cruise line sailing. Holland America Line was founded in 1873 under the name, Netherlands-America Steamship Company. Holland’s first ship was the Rotterdam, which sailed its 15-day maiden voyage from the Netherlands to New York City on October 15, 1872.
Originally, Holland America Line was a major carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States from the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s. It wasn’t until 1895 that Holland sailed its first passenger cruise. Later in 1989, Holland America Line became a member of Carnival Corporation family, the largest cruise company in the world. Today, Holland America Line sails 15 ships to 7 continents and carries almost 800,000 guests a year.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, crews from around the fleet are throwing special 140 anniversary parties aboard their respective ships. Join in on the celebrations and check out the photo gallery below!
